Things to know before you add a speed limiter to your car

With the constant rise in road accidents and subsequent loss of life, the UAE government had taken several measures against preventing accidents, and making speed limiters available to the people is one of them.

Just as the name suggests, a speed limiter is a device when installed in your vehicle restricts the particular vehicle from traveling over a predetermined speed. It is not equivalent to a cruise control setup, and the speed will not exceed the set limit, even if the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

Now, let us have a look at the different things you should know if you are thinking about installing a speed limiter into your car:

 

1. Types of speed limiters available

Mainly there are two types of speed limiters available: Adjustable and Intelligent.

The adjustable speed limiter is the most common and standard type of speed limiter that is used in cars. The driver can select the maximum speed that he or she wants to drive and then drive normally. Once the car reaches that set speed limit, it won’t go beyond; even if the driver continues to press the accelerator.

An intelligent speed limiter or assistance system is more advanced than the adjustable limiter and functions by linking the speed limiter to a camera that spots the speed limit signs on road. Once the car reaches an area that has a different speed limit set, the limiter will adjust accordingly.

 

2. Difference between cruise control and a speed limiter

By installing a speed limiter, you don’t lose control of your vehicle. You still have to keep pressing the accelerator to keep it in motion. If you don’t, the vehicle will slow down and stop.

Whereas, the cruise control system; once enabled takes the control of the vehicle’s accelerator to maintain a set speed. Here, the driver is not required to press the accelerator, as the car will continue to move at a steady speed.

More advanced systems like the adaptive cruise control systems can also brake the car while in motion, automatically enabling them to maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front.

 

3. How does a speed limiter work

Once a speed limiter system is installed in your car, its speed sensors can detect the speed at which the car is moving. This information is transferred to the car engine’s computer; which once the car reaches the set speed limit, restricts or cuts the flow of fuel and air into the engine. This automatically stops the car from exceeding the set speed limit; even if the driver continues to press the accelerator.

 

4. How much does a speed limiter cost?

The cost of speed limiters varies depending on the type you prefer and the vehicle you are using. As its installation is a complicated process involving reconfiguration of the wiring and the computer system on the car, it is always advised to be installed by a licensed professional.

 

5. How is a car speed limiter device installed?

The speed limiter system is installed by resetting the wiring system, the computer system, and the fuel injection system on the car. Once it is set in place and the wires are reconnected, the car’s computer system will be tested to make sure that everything is working correctly.

 

6. Cars that have speed limiters pre-installed in them

Most modern cars these days come with a built-in speed limiter that strictly prevents the car from reaching excessive speeds.

Popular car manufacturers such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Chevrolet, etc have cars that come with pre-installed speed limiters. Some countries have made it mandatory that cars should have a speed limiter installed in them.
