The right way to clean and sanitize the interiors of your car

With the lockdown restrictions eased up, and our lives getting back to it’s “normal” phase, most of us would have already started going to our workplaces and hence re-started using the cars in full swing.

There’s no doubt that it is the easiest and the most convenient of the transport choices available, but what about its safety? Pre-pandemic or post-pandemic, your car’s interior could be one of the most contaminated areas you might be touching or using, and it needs to be regularly sanitized.

Pal Auto Garage, the best garage in UAE is here to help you out with the right ways to clean and sanitize the interiors of your car.  Let’s look at the car sanitization tips:

1. Find the right spot

Working directly under the sun is undoubtedly uncomfortable and it can also make the cleaning products you will be using less effective with them reacting to heat or leaving stain or damage to the interior.

Therefore, the number one rule, before starting to clean the interiors of your car, find a shaded or cool area, which also has good lighting.

2. Remove trash & clutter

Wear a pair of gloves, put on a face mask, and start by grabbing all of those leftover food, food packers, bottles, cans, and trash that you can find in your car. Also remember to check for them under the seats, cracks between seats, the trunk, etc, and make sure to dispose of them in the most responsible way.

3. Essentials for car sanitization & cleaning

Unlike cleaning the car from the outside, which could be fun and quite easy, cleaning the interior of your car could be a difficult task, as there are various places or areas that are touch to reach out.

However, with the help of a set of products and tools, car sanitization & cleaning the interior of your car could also be made a smooth experience. Let’s have a look at them:

  1. Gloves, masks, face shields, or eye protection
  2. Vacuum cleaner
  3. Towels (Cloth and paper)
  4. Microfiber cloth
  5. Disinfectant
  6. Interior cleaner
  7. Vinyl or leather cleaner and conditioner
  8. Carpet cleaner
  9. Trash bags
  10. Brush, scrubber
  11. Spray bottle

4. Start by vacuuming

Vacuuming is essential to get as much dirt off the various surfaces and upholstery before you apply any cleaning compound. Removing the carpets and floor mats, off the car, you can start with the dashboard and door panels and then move to the upholstery (front and back seats).

Also, make sure to thoroughly vacuum the blow cracks and crevices using an air gun or slim-tip attachment. The air vents, floor, and under seats should also not be left behind.

5. High touch areas

Using your preferred disinfectant and a microfiber cloth, wipe all those high-touch areas or surfaces following the instructions on the product label. High-touch areas include- door handles, window buttons, steering wheel, gauge cluster, gear, dash, armrests, seats, hand bars, seat belts, buckles, radio and music control, instrument panel, etc.

As high-touch areas are the most sensitive points for germs to spread, it is really important to disinfect these spots on a regular basis. However, the frequency will obviously depend on how often you use the car.

6. Clean the upholstery

Upholstery of cars is mainly made up of leather, vinyl, or cloth, all three of which require different cleaning methods.

Leather being a natural material is sensitive to dryness and once it loses its natural oils, it could become less flexible and start to wear off. Therefore avoid the use of any strong liquids or compounds to clean your leather seats and also don’t scrub too hard. Soap and water would be the ideal cleaning agents for leather, and you can also consider applying leather conditioners after cleaning.

7. Carpets and floor mats

As carpets and floor mats are likely to be the dirtiest area or part of your car’s interior, you can start with them or keep them to the last. Removing the floor mats or carpets from the inside of the car, shake them firmly to lose the dirt.

After vacuuming between the grooves, once they are dirt-free, wash them out with a strong jet of water and air-dry them afterward. If you are using any detergent, make sure that they don’t leave the mats slippery which can be unsafe while driving.
