How to treat your car scratches | Pal Auto Garage

Car scratches can occur due to a variety of reasons: careless driving, careless parking, vandalism, careless handling of sharp objects, accidents, etc. Let them be minor or major; having scratches on your car can undoubtedly affect the overall appearance of your car and fixing them with a new coat of paint or even a small touch-up could be expensive.

Scratches on cars, depending on the magnitude of the force vary from obscure to deep ones and they are basically differentiated into three types of scratches such as clear coat scratch, primer-level scratch, and deep paint scratch. Now, let’s individually examine these three types of scratches and the different ways they can be removed:

1. Clear-coat scratch and techniques for scratch repair

A thin line of clear coat is what acts as a shield to the car paint, protecting it from various issues like direct exposure to sunlight, dust, and different chemicals. If the scratch on your car sustains only to the clear-coat layer, it can be fixed with ease, and there are different ways to do it.

To figure out the scratch’s severity on the car body, slowly run your fingernail over the scratch. If it catches on the scratch it means that has cut deep and if it does not, it implies that the scratch has been sustained within the clear-coat layer, and you can follow the below methods for clear coat scratch repair

  • Clear coat scratch repair technique 1: Using toothpaste

First of all, clean the particular spot thoroughly or wash the entire car body to remove dirt.

Thereafter, once the surface is dry, apply the required amount of toothpaste onto a wet microfiber towel and rub it on the scratch surface gently until the toothpaste is well applied.

After it is applied, wash out the surface to remove the residues and dry the surface once again using a towel. You can repeat the same process a few times if the scratch or marks of it are still found to remain.

  • Clear coat scratch repair technique 2: Using sandpaper

Another technique to remove minor scratches is using 3000-grit sandpaper. After soaking the sandpaper, gently sand the scratch surface until it looks flat and the scratch is no longer visible. Thereafter, use a microfiber towel to wipe and clean the surface.

  • Clear coat scratch repair technique 3: Polishing compound

After applying and spreading the required amount of the rubbing compound onto a polishing pad, run the polisher or drill on a drill at 1,200 rpm until you get a light haze on the surface. You can repeat the process to bring back the glazing.

2. Primer-level scratch and methods used for scratch repair

Primer is an additional layer of protection given for the car body by carmakers, which also makes the body, dazzling and sleek. If the scratches on the car’s body cut through the clear coat layer and reach the primer-level of coating, the body paint will ruin and it can also lead to rusting if left unattended.

Primer level scratches therefore require more time and facility to be fixed and most body shops would recommend painting the whole part to avoid inconsistency with the paint.

One of the methods to remove the primer-level scratches on cars is the following:

  • Primer-level scratch repair method: Using a scratch-removal product

To ensure that the surface is very clean before you apply the product, you can either rinse the surface alone thoroughly or wash the car completely.

Once it is dry, take some polishing compound in a scrubbing pad and apply directly onto the scratch and the nearby surfaces. Do not forget to wipe away the residue using a microfiber towel once the process is completed. You can also redo the same procedure a few times if required.

3. Deep paint scratch and

Deep paint scratches are so extreme that the metal under the layers of the paint are visible and therefore they are hard to fix. Generally occurring from purposefully made destructions, or accidents, deep paint scratches are recommended to be treated at the earliest.

There are several car body painting professionals and experts who can remove all of the above-mentioned types of car scratches and restore your car to its showroom condition. The cost of fixing the scratch by professionals will depend on the severity of the scratch and its spread area.
