High-touch areas & Vehicle sanitization checklist

With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to form the hazardous backdrop of our lives, it is important to keep our vehicles infection-free and for the same reason, ‘sanitization’, and ‘cleaning’ of vehicles have acquired more significance in the recent past.

Regular car sanitization or disinfection of vehicles cleans and disinfect them from all kinds of possible germs and viruses that it may contain and ensures that it won’t be affected in the near future.

1. Vacuum the interior

Essentials: Brush, Vacuum cleaner, and accessories

Method:

• Using the brush, scrub the surface
• Vacuum the interior, especially the floors using the vacuum cleaner in the anti-clockwise direction

2. Clean the interior windows

Essentials: Brush, Microfiber cloth

Method: Using a diluted solution and microfiber cloth ensures that no streaks are left behind

3. Clean the exterior windows

Essentials: Glass cleaner solution, Microfiber cloth

Method: Using a diluted solution and microfiber cloth, clean in a ‘box’ manner: start with the corners and then up to down and then left to right.

4. Clean the upholstery

Essentials: Interior shampoo, Foam sponge, Absorbent cloth, Clean water

Method: Using the above products clean the upholstery and make sure to not scrub too hard as it could damage the leather. You can also apply leather conditioners after cleaning.

5. Clean the inside of the doors

Essentials: Towel, Cleaner solution, Wide brush, Small brush

Method: Using a cleaner solution and the required type of brushes for each surface, clean the inside of the doors and nearby areas. Be careful about the control panel that some cars might have on their doors.

6. Clean the dashboard

Essentials: Soft microfiber cloth, Warm water, mild soap

Method: Using a microfiber cloth, warm water and mild soap keep your dashboards always clean.

7. Clean the steering wheel

Essentials: Brush, Interior cleaner (Leather), Dry microfiber cloth

Method: As germs and viruses from the hands of a driver can quickly get transferred to the steering wheel, clean it using an interior cleaner (Leather) and a dry microfiber cloth.

8. Clean the tires, rims, and floors

Essentials: Mild shampoo or soap, All-purpose cleaner, Brushes (Long and small)

Method: Prone to holding the largest amount of mud, dirt, and germs, these are undoubtedly the most contaminated areas of your vehicle and it needs to be cleaned thoroughly with mild shampoo or soap, an all-purpose cleaner, and different brushes.

 

• High touch areas checklist

Using your preferred vehicle sanitization or disinfectant product, and a microfiber cloth, make sure to clean all these high-touch areas or surfaces following the instructions on the particular product’s label. High-touch areas of a vehicle include:

1. Steering wheel
2. Key and remotes
3. External door handles
4. Internal door handles
5. Window controls
6. Seat buttons, adjustment bars
7. Trunk lid or lift gate grabs
8. Start button and other buttons
9. Gauge cluster
10. Mirrors (Both sides) and rear view
11. HVAC vents
12. Gear shift
13. Signal and wiper levers
14. Center knobs
15. Center console
16. Armrests
17. Hand bars
18. Seat belts and buckles
19. Parking brake handle
20. Radio and music control system, navigation
21. Instrument panel
22. Dashboards

 

As high-touch areas are the most sensitive points for germs to spread, it is really important to disinfect these spots on a regular basis. However, the frequency will obviously depend on how often you use the car.
