Do’s and don’ts for disinfecting your car
The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed our lives and lifestyle by incorporating extreme measures of isolation and safety precautions to keep ourselves safe and also to effectively contribute to flattening the curve.
With a large number of people still avoiding the public transport system and preferring to use their own private vehicles during this ever-changing crisis, it is important to keep them infection-free and disinfected regularly.
Let’s, therefore, have a look at some of the Do’s and don’ts while you are disinfecting car:
- Do’s:
- Do remove the trash and clutter from the car before car disinfection
- Do vacuum the interiors before car disinfection
- Do get the cleaning items and essentials in one place
- Do wear gloves and masks or face shields while disinfecting car
- Do use a soft cloth or microfiber cloth
- Do use disinfectant solutions that contain at least 70% Isopropyl alcohol
- Do use car-safe disinfectants
- Do make sure to disinfect the car in a well-ventilated area
- Do care for the carpets and upholstery
- Do disinfect the air/AC vents
- Do clean or replace the cabin air filter
- Do disinfect the cabins and dash or glove box
- Do disinfect under the seat and below the steering wheel
- Do let the interiors be exposed to the sun after car disinfection
- Do wash your hands before and after the vehicle disinfection
- Don’t:
- Don’t add extra water into the disinfectant solution (It will dilute and reduce the product’s efficiency)
- Don’t mix disinfectants or chemicals together
- Don’t go for long gaps between vehicle disinfection
- Do not use disinfectant products or chemicals on the human body, pets, or food
- Do not store the disinfectant products or chemicals in places easily accessible by children or pets
- Don’t disinfect the car in a non-ventilated space
- Don’t use the cloth you have used for exteriors for the interiors
- Don’t abandon the concealed areas
- Do not use thinners or other harsh and abrasive cleaners (Bleach, hydrogen peroxide, benzene, etc)
- Do not use ammonia-based cleaners (On the infotainment screen)
- Do not use cleaning products and chemicals that have expired.
- Do not touch the center screen while disinfecting car (Use voice commands)
- High touch areas
Using your preferred disinfectant and a microfiber cloth, wipe all those high-touch areas or surfaces following the instructions on the product label. High-touch areas include:
- Steering wheel
- Key and remotes
- Door handles (Exterior and interior)
- Trunk lid or lift gate grabs
- Start button and other buttons
- Gauge cluster
- Mirrors (Both sides) and rear view
- HVAC vents
- Gear shift
- Signal and wiper levers
- Center knobs
- Center console
- Armrests
- Hand bars
- Seat belts and buckles
- Parking brake handle
- Radio and music control system
- Instrument panel
As high-touch areas are the most sensitive points for germs to spread, it is really important to disinfect these spots on a regular basis. However, the frequency will obviously depend on how often you use the car.
- Essentials
Cleaning your car from the inside, unlike cleaning it from the outside, could be a difficult task, as there are various places or areas that are touch to reach out.
However, with a set of necessary products and tools (such as the following) in hand, cleaning the interior of your car could also be made a smooth experience.
- Gloves, masks, face shields, or eye protection
- Vacuum cleaner
- Towels (Cloth and paper)
- Microfiber cloth
- Disinfectant
- Interior cleaner
- Vinyl or leather cleaner and conditioner
- Carpet cleaner
- Trash bags
- Brush, scrubber
